We at Unfinished Business want
you to enjoy your new piece of furniture for many years to come.
If you plan to finish your piece yourself, the following
directions for finishing are to aid in the process. Hope it helps
and enjoy your new furniture!

Before you begin
Combustion of the
rags is a serious danger. Never leave application rags
inside. Clean thoroughly after use.
Be sure to test a
area of the furniture before applying stain. You don't
want all your work to go to waste.
Stains and Top
Coats are non-toxic when dry. While your piece is
drying keep it away from small children and pets.
Stir stains well
before and during application. Pigments in the stain
will settle to the bottom, producing an uneven stain
color.
Environments below
60 degrees will increase drying time significantly and
are not recommended for the finishing process.
Work
Area
For finishing, a
well ventilated area with plenty of room to work
is required.
Materials Required
-
Clean rags/paper towels
-
Foam brushes or paint pad for large areas
(available for purchase at our store)
-
#120 grain sandpaper (Most of our pieces are
pre-sanded- not necessary)
-
Steel wool for buffering between top coats
-
Mineral Spirits for clean-up
Step One: Piece
Preparation
Step Two: Application
of Finish
-
Wipe on stain with rag or foam brush. Wipe evenly
and with the wood grain.
-
Wipe away excess stain with the grain of the wood.
Do not allow excess finish. For white mist color
it is extremely important to wipe excess. Allow
white mist to dry for 24 hours before application
of top coat.
-
Do not sand the finish- the color is very delicate
at this point and an even finish is necessary.
Multiple applications of your finish color will
darken the color.
-
Allow finish to dry completely; generally 6-14
hours depending on the environment.
Step Three: Application
of Top Coat
-
Apply the top coat using another clean rag or
brush with the grain
-
Use long strokes for large pieces to ensure
uniformity throughout the piece
-
Allow
top coat to dry completely; generally 6-14 hours
depending on the environment.
-
Use steel wool to smooth surface between top coat
applications.
-
A minimum of three top coats is recommended. Four
or more is required if you are concerned with
waterproofing.
After Finishing
It is recommended that the top coat is given two
weeks to cure prior to using the piece. Although it
can be used prior to, use caution during the curing
process. High activity is not recommended within
this fourteen day period.
Enjoy!
Enjoy your new piece of furniture with a quality
finish that will protect your piece for many years
to come! Routine maintenance suggests the use of
lemon oil, available for purchase in our stores. For
dull finishes, consider cleaning the surface well
and reapplying a top coat.
